Context

Built in 1853, Gran Hotel Ingles was the first hotel to have a restaurant, and is located on the first street in the city that was provided with electricity, currently Calle Echegaray. Hidden Away Hotels acquired the building that had been the oldest luxury hotel in Madrid, relegated to neglect over time to restore its former splendor.

Solution

The old English Hotel is located between two buildings of five floors with more than 150 years, with different levels between them and built on half-timbered walls (mixed wood and brick factory), particular building typology of the old quarter of Madrid. This made the intervention very difficult to adapt them to the needs of a high-end hotel as ambitious as I wanted in the client. To solve this delicate situation we decided to have Enrique Nuere and Paco Cabeza, two of the most relevant professionals in Spain in the treatment of wooden structures.

From IHP we carry out the realization of the architecture and engineering projects, as well as the project management and managing the execution of the work. The integral project, located in the heart of the city -in the center of Madrid of the Austrians-, was completed with the participation of Rockwell Group, which is responsible for the development of the interior design of the property.

History

An already unique hotel in Madrid at the end of the century.

When it was inaugurated in 1886, the historic Gran Hotel Inglés, originally designed by Juan José Sánchez Pescador, was a historic moment: not only was it located on the first street in Madrid to receive electricity, but also the first hotel to have a restaurant .
It had “elevator, bathroom on each floor, lighting, steam heating and all the advances that make life more comfortable”, as described by La Epoca
